I just wanted to let all of you know that I am very proud of you!! The soccer was fantastic and the activities away from the field were full of laughs.

Robyn, your job was never ending and you did it with a smile...thank you.
Brad, wow, I can't say enough about your contribution to the success of this trip. You are an amazing coach and a good friend to all.
Lee, the pictures,video, rides, support and many laughs, thank you so much for all of your help.
Mike and Annelise, everytime we asked for help you were there without question, thanks for that and for your friendship.
Girls, you will forever hold a special place in my heart, it was the trip of a lifetime.

I too want to say - what a great bunch of girls. You were all so much fun - I'd hang out with you again in an instant! THANK YOU! so much for the card - it was sweet & funny & it goes in my "treasure box"!
Parents, I'd like to tell you how great your girls were! They were ALL very polite, helpful and kind to me, to each other, and to those we encountered along our trip. I really enjoyed my time with them. I'm sure you are proud of them. I am!

I have so many thank yous and thoughts while writing this last post and I will mention a few of them, but will save the most importnat two for last ...
- Robyn (Mama Robsey) for her tireless work, organizing, seeing to the needs of each girl and having to deal with the changes and special requests of the coaching staff. Her tiredless efforts behind the scenes, behind the soccer, to make everyone comfortable ... coaches included. We are truly thankful!!!!
- To the parents who came down and helped ...
* Lee ... photographer. videographer,driver, "lackey", etc. Plus he bought us a beer once in a while :-)
* Annelise & Michael ...there when you need them & not there when you didn't :-)
* Colin/Stu/Shelly/Jim/ ... helping with driving when required but most of all cheering on our girls at their games
- Kristyn Large ... for helping with the coaching, watching the girls at the hotel/mall/Busch Gardens ... being that extra set of eys and ears when required. She helped being a big sister to many of the girls.
- To our parents/relatives ... thanks for all your support throughout the season both on & off the field. You have entrusted us with your most valuable "possessions" - your children - and I feel priveldged.
- To our sponsors/donators/supportting clubs ... a huge thank you for making this a "dream come true" for the players.
- To our employers, who value the fact that the extra stuff we do outside of work matters and they support that.
- To Sue for helping keep us financially organized - this is a fairly large undertaking for the past 3-4 months and is done so all behind the scenes. Thanks for keeping me personally organized. It has been a long haul and I am thankful for your contribution and support (thanks to Lauren and Dana too).

Second to last thank you to the players / ladies / girls ...
- I am thankful and proud!!!!
- Thankful to have been a part of this chapter of your life.
- Proud of you as young women representing Vancouver Island and making your parents, friends, supporters, and community proud.
- Proud of you as soccer players and playing soccer against teams that we are not supposed to be able to compete against.
- Proud of your personal sacrifices to the team.
- Girls ... You belonged at the championships and proved it.

My last thank you is to the person that I believe made this all possible ... Nigel.
- Coach. Mentor. Fundraiser. Friend. Planner. Financier. Supporter. Cheerleader. Counselor. Protector. Babysitter. Leader
- The vast amount of work that Nigel did for pre-season, season play, post-season, game planning, post-game analysis, Florida trip planning, etc. is not comprehensible by many. It was huge!
- Everything he did was was with the teams/girls best interest in mind!
- Nigel took this group of girls and made them into a true team.
- I have personally learned a lot from his coaching and approach to coaching ... for this I am indebted.

I think the experience for the girls has great ... the only thing that would top it would be to have come with the Championship. But that will have to wait for another year or two :-). I believe the staff put together an agenda that kept the girls busy/happy/interested/educated and in the end, maybe made this trip a fantastic memeory for their life.

Our GiGi Makes the All-Tournament Team !!

Congratulations to Georgia who was named an MVP defender for the Girls U14 All-Tournament Team. The team is named by the opposition coaches during the tournaments games.

As the article states ...
Five players were tied for the most votes received during the North American Finals with three each. Those players included: Sweatman from the Freedom, Andresen from Parsippany, Gonzalez from Kalamazoo, Olivia Kappeli from Coastal WFC, Georgia Grzybowski of the West Coast Capitals and Meghan Cox from the Northern Virginia Majestics.

Day#8 - Going Crazy at Busch Gardens

I am writing this at the airport waiting for flights back home, so I will write some notes and clean it up later and add all the photos we took at Busch Gardens. The girls final day was spent at Busch Gardens for a day of fun. What does Busch Gardens have? What doesn't it have ... rides; zoo/animals; shows (musical & animal shows); well deserved greasy food and pop; shops; games; and people watching.

Some quick points/notes of things I noticed/enjoyed...

- groups of girls bonding and having fun

- Kristen L ... so pumped/excited to be there

- GiGi & Brittany ... newbies on roller coasters --> they are now converted
- Bub & Erin on the Shekrai ride closing their eyes at the top

- Erin has gotten over her fear of coasters ---> gone from crying on the first ride (wooden roller coaster called Gwazi) to riding the scary SheiKra (vertical "death drop") over and over again. Erin always used to stay behind and watch our bags and take photos ... now what do we do? She is always such good fun to make fun of and listen to her scream (and scream, and scream, and ...)

- Speaking of screaming ... Ms Hackett has a nice set of lungs

- Garnet appears the most unafraid of the "big" rides (as opposed to Moira) ... see pictures below

- the effects on the Kumba ride slowed down many of our intrepid travellers

- the smells of number of smoke houses in the park (mmmmm)
- a couple of us got stuck on the sky gondola ride for 10 minutes due to a malfunction
- the day ended on a bit of a downer when the skys opened up and rain /thunder/lightening closed the rides ... no need to go on the Congo River Ride to get wet
- the Gorilla and chimp enclosures are awesome
- many of us saw the cute baby white rhino
- we also saw our U15 and U16 "at the park

Given everyones energy level we headed back to the hotel for some order-in pizzas. We have to keep a bit of energy for our trip back to the "wet" coast for tomorrow ... this will be tough.

Day#7 - Burned Out In More Ways Than One

The fact that the day very hot and humid (95% humidity) did not help with the fact that our Capitals were very tired and beat up. The girls were very tired and some of the players were nursing injuries today (toes, calves, quads, stomachs, backs and heads). I think everything has caught up with them (i.e. travel, time zones, food, previous match play and the excitment of the whole trip). That said, we were not going to sit down and play without a fight.
- Northern Viginia club is a good club (ranked 3rd) with a number of teams in the tournament
- they have a very fast and skilled team ... which we would soon learn
- play from the beginning was somewhat equal with the Majestics using their fast skillful midfielder to control the game and try to get balls to a couple of very fast players (a striker and outside right mid)
- we decided to play a high pressure game and go after them with a 3-4-3 (or more like a 3-4-1-2)
- the Majestics caught us twice not playing our usual solid positional soccer and placed a couple of long balls between & behind our defenders for their fast strikers and mids to run onto
- we did have chances by applying pressure to their defence who coughed up balls to us but for the most part we were not effective at capitalizing on the mistakes and getting a qualit shot on goal
- going into the halftime the score was 2-0 --> again the score was not fully indictive of the play ... they just capitalized on their chances better
- the second half was a little better for us, but again we could not finish

So our soccer is over for the trip and we have a day and a half to recover and do somehting fun with the girls. Group decisions are getting harder as the girls get tired so we will probably make their minds up for them :-)

The weather has turned a bit sour (overcast, rain) so our trip to the beach was cancelled and it might be a free night to do what they want ... mall, hotel/swimming, movie, etc.

Meet Our Opponents - Game#4 - N.Virginia Majestics

Northern Virginia Majestics
“This is a team of players who have competitive spirit, dedication and team unity,” said Northern Virginia Majestics Coach Marie Schweitzer.
“While I am pleased with the 45 goals we scored during the regular season, I am more impressed we only allowed seven goals against in ten games played. This season, our goal was to qualify for the SYL North American Finals. Now that we have reached our goal, we are looking forward to playing competitive teams from the United States and Canada.”

Day#6 - Washington Freedom Show The Caps How Soccer is Played

We came up gainst the Washington Freedom today ... the most difficult team in our division. They have a very well structured accademy-type program with a draw area from the Washington DC area and also Virginia, Delaware & Maryland (big). So we knew it would be tough.

- it was quite hot/humid today but a very strong wind/breeze helped cool things off at times.
- the girls are starting to feel the affects of the trip (excitement, food, etc) and are a bit "battle weary"
- the first half we had the wind and sun against us and we had trouble getting the ball dee into the Freedoms half of the field
- the Freedom scored a very nice goal from outside the 18 yard box when we allowed their player to get within striking range and shoot (a lovely hard shot in the upper corner that V could not reach)
- the highlight of the second half was a great diving save that V pulled out of the air. She put on a good show in front of Freedom's Nikki Wright (Canada's ex-keeper and Freedon keeper coach)
- we bascially played a defensive game in the first half
- in the second half with the wind aiding us, our deep attacks were more prevalent
- however the Freedom are an excellent counter-attacking team and many of our deep attacks were turned around into deep thrusts by the Freedom
- we gave them one too many corners and they scored on a lovely corner kick / header combination
- the Freedom are a very skilled (1st touch on the ball was great); very fast passing; long passing team - this combined with a lot of movement off of the ball created a very tough team to play
In the end, the girls worked very hard (especially the centre backs) and although never satisfied with a loss, we were somewhat content with the game as we respected the Freedom's skill, speed, pattern of play, etc.

The weather turned a bit sour at the end of the game so we packed up and went back to the hotel to clean up and the girls went and relaxzed at a movie (Twilight - New Moon).

Meet Our Opponents - Game#3 - Washington Freedom

Washington Freedom
The Washington Freedom championed the 12-team Mid Atlantic Division with a record of 9-2-0. This team tied Qucikstrike SC for the most goals scored during their 11-game season with 34, an average of 3.09 per match. The Freedom’s defense was their façade, they allowed just five goals all season. Coached by Jamil Fayadi and Ellis Pierre, the team’s top-scorer was Marlo Sweatman, who netted eight goals and added an assist.

Day#5 - A Great Game To Watch & Be Part Of

Today's game vs the Chicago Magic was played under hot humid conditions - definitely the hottest day of the trip thus far. Here are my thoughts/comments ...
- the Chicago Magic are a good team (see previous write up)
- first half the girls seemed a bit tired and not their aggressive selves
- the Magic were winning most 50/50 balls and getting to the ball first ... especially getting through our midfield
- it was not all bad ... just not their usual self
- unfortnately we played against a 12th player today (i.e. the Canadian ref we had) and he made some very "unusual" calls
* awarded a PK against us for a great diving save that "V" came out for. I think he said that V lifted her legs too high / aggressively vs the attacking player
* the Magic coach also shook his head on that call (and many others). I think he went so far as to say that he hoped his girls miss the PK.
* fortunately "V" made a very good save and our definders helped out by attacking the rebound and pressuring their kicker to make the 2nd shot wide --> KARMA :-)
- the second half saw Nigel switch things around a bit positioninally to utilize more of the midfield
- this resulted in the first 10 minutes of play the ball did not enter our half of the field
- we started getting more chances and deeper penetrations into the magic end
- we unfortunately didn't capitalize on a couple of good chances and the game ended in a 0-0 tie

The linesman came up to me in the final minute of play and said "Your girls played a hellofa game".

After the game we ran off to the local Publix market to get a late lunch and then go back to the field for the players evening of festivities
- free time in the player village / hospitality tent to collect some free swag
- watching some 5 v 5 soccer matches
- wating the GU15 girls play vs Richmond Kickers in one of the highlight matches of the evening (our Caps they lost 2-1)
- get in on a USL-supplied dinner

After that, more relaxation and pool time for the girls before hitting the sack to recharge their batteries for another game tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a tough game and will test the girls.

Meet Our Opponents - Game#2 - Chicago Magic

Coached by Karl Smith, Angel Garcia and Steve Sobey this team completed a 5-2-0 season in the Midwest Division of the Super Y-League. The side was very balanced, averaging 1.85 goals per game while allowing only 0.85. The team’s top scorers were Meghan Mannix, who had three goals and an assist, and Taylor Markanich, who also scored three goals on the year.

Day#4 - Nerve-cited ... Then ... Frustrated

Today the girls showed all that they deserve to be at this tournament. As they had most of the game in my opinion and due to a coupl eof losses of our concentration we ended up dropping the game to MPS.

I liked Nigel's summary to the girls "Minor let downs in a major effort".

A summary of the game and day ...
- before the game Nigel asked the girls what they were feeling in one word. For the most part the girls were nervous and excited - or nerv-cited (coined by Soraya)
- we created more chances than the Renegades
- We went into half 0-0
- Renegades scored 2 quick goals ... perhaps a loss of focus or pressure by the girls caused these lapses
- the Caps pushed hard for goals and they were rewards fairly quickly
- we also had numerous other opportunites and chances to ties it up
- in the end we were ahead on everything except the goals :-(
- Brad overheard the other coach say to his team "You girls were lucky today"

In the end we left the field sad, dejected, mad, frustrated and grrrrrr (one word phrases the girls used to summarize the day later). There are always those games we wish we could take back because we know the outcome should have been different.

So what does this mean for the standings and chances?? It means our chances our somewhat out of our hands - we are not fully in control of our own destiny. We will probably have to win both remaining games to go clear through ... or at least get 4 points to have a shot at a wildcard position.

Meet Our Opponents - Game#1 - MPS Renegades

MPS Renegades
Renegades had a strong season in 2009. Anchored by a strong defense and excellent goalkeeping, the team allowed the fewest goals (0.50 GAA) in the New England division and finished in second place with only one loss. Powered by an excellent work ethic, team mentality and camaraderie – the players handled several serious injuries throughout the season. Equipped with a technical offense and hardworking midfield, the girls believe they can compete with any team. They completed the season by defeating the U14 Arsenal Ladies Centre of Excellence squad in the Arsenal Cup in London, England in August. They are sure to be a handful for their competition in the SYL North American Finals.

Day#3 - Pretty Much the Same Thing ... With A Twist

Pretty much the same routine today except at a higher level of expectation and intensity. The girls are still a wee bit sluggish and getting used to the time zone change and heat ... but it is coming along nicely. Nigel & I saw the Coastal WFC team coming in last night at the airport at midnight and saw them on the field today practising from 11-noon (we practised noon - 1pm) ... I wonder how their performance will be in a couple of days!?

Also, the girls had a nice block of homework time today and some good team time in the pool today - a time to bond, climatize more and relax.

In the evening the girls got to take in an NCAA men's soccer playoff game between local Florida State University (FSU) and in-state rivalry Stetson. It was a good experience to take in a college NCAA game with approx 5400 fans in the stands and a good soccer game. Hopefully this was something the girls can take and put in their memory bank.

Day #2 - Soccer Training Starts

Dear Diary,
We are getting into this Florida lifestyle but the 7 am wakeup and walk is not for me ....

Just kidding. Here is a synospsis of today's events...
- Up at 7am and out for a 7:30am walk
- Beakfast at 8am. The girl's ate healthy - however, Brad, that's another story (mmmm ... biscuits and gravy and bacon)
- After breakfast was homework and personal time to 11am
- We headed to Ed Radice sports fields for some soccer training at noon. We arrived at the fields with no one else there (Nigel is a keener). We did out typical warmup and some individual ball skills and worked into passing/possession and then a scrimmage. It was warm and humid BUT the girls did well.
- After training we had a picnic at the fields (Subway, milk, veggies, and fruit)
- Back at the hotel by 3pm for some free time, swimming and more homework for those that required the time.
- The girls were given some additional time at the mall tonight for dinner & shopping --> this is not helping us having all of the restaurants at the mall complex!! :-) Note to Bud ... send Kristen more money!
- In the evening we fit in some visits from some parents and calls to parents were done (sorry if we have to limit some of the girls time on the phone right too many girls and not enough time)
- Coach Kristen has landed and will be present at tomorrow's training ... the girls are in trouble now!

Note to diary ...
Those 12 passenger vans are long!! That Lexus in the hotel parking lot did not know what hit it.
Note to self ...
Investiagte ICBC Insurance for USA travel, and accidents with rental van. Sigh :-(

Day #1 Climatization and Regulation

The first day in Florida ended with a day at the beach. After arriving at the hotels the girls has some free time to organize themselves and we had a "lightly" organized day to recover from the flight - this included...
- relax & recover time
- homework time
- time at the mall for lunch and a little bit of shopping
- beach time at Cleawater Beach (see the pictures)
- dinner at local famous restaurant Frenchies Rock Away Grill(see pictures). By dinner time there were a number of players gazing into their food with glazed eyes due to tiredness.
- a sightseeing trip on the way back to the hotel (OK it was a little bit of a detour back to the hotel after a missed exit on the highway :-))

What is important ... Is that I think the girls had a great day and they were all very happy (except they wanted more time at the mall of course :-) )

Victoria to Tampa - A Long Road (But Worth It)

As I said in our previous post ... it was a good day to be leaving Victoria! I understand that it is still raining and the weather today in Florida is enought to make those at home jeleous.

We are safely in Tampa albeit a bit weary/tired, but the girls are "pumped" (that's probably too light of a word for it). Our job will be to try to bring them back to earth and get them focussing on the soccer (for a while) - over the next few days.

Some observations & fun things, that happened along the way ...
- Brittany carrying her weight in food
- the girls were very well behaved on the trip & flights - witness the stewardess noting over the loudspeaker while doing the inboard announcementsthat "teenage girls can be quite"
- Moira is a seasoned traveller now :-)
- The Marejka's suitacase contents were deposited all over the carosel in Atlanta ... everyone knows now what Bary's underwear and socks look like :-)
- some of the girls can stay up all night and others cannot
- Andrew & I had a good good chuckle listening to the girls as we decended to Tampa's airport - hearing nothing but "Oh my God look at the beaches", "Oh my God look at the birds"; "Oh my God ... this"; "Oh my God ... that"

A note to the parents ... Your daughters are being looked after by a super caring and thoughtful person in Robyn. She is what keeps the team going and Nigel and I could not get along without her.

We will try to get the girls to give all the parent a short call every night or second night on our Skype setup (i.e. Voice Over IP calls ... free of charge).

Final Warmup Match Provides Goals, Goals, Goals

The Capitals hosted Lakehill's Girls U17 team at Royal Athletic Park on Saturday morning. Reports from players and fans were as follws..
- it was cold both on the field and in the stands
- the girls came out slow but went into the lockers at half time with a 2-0 goal lead
- a half-time "pep talk" from Nigel reminded the girls to focus, play up to their potential and not take the opposition too lightly
- the girls took heed to this and came out in the second half and increased their work rate and pressure on the Lakehill team. This resulted in a number of goals in the second half.
- the Caps then used this lead to then work on their possessional soccer

Thanks to Lakehill for hekping the GU14's get warmed up and ready for their march to gold down in Florida.

Capitals Honeing Their Team Play

Friday night saw the Capitals take on a very fast & skilled Lakehill Boys U14 Gold Team with other guest players. The Capitals knew this would be a very fast game as the Lakehill team (who are 2nd in the League standings) very skillfully moves the ball around. The Cap's met them early in their season last May and had a tight game against them (2-2 tie). As predicted the game flowed very fast and was fairly equal. The Lakehill team attacked hard but could not penetrate the Cap's defense very well - they did put two goals in the back of our net on Capital misqueues. The Capitals could not capitalize on many of their chances - especially those within the 18 yard box ... I think the grass surface beat us many times. Kudo's to Lakehill keeper was very solid. mmmm ... one of our keepers is from Lakehill - I think I see a pattern!?

So in the end, we came out behind on goals but ahead on our team shape; playing together again; experience of the grass surface and playign against a very fast/skilled team.

A HUGE thanks to Gorge Soccer Association fro providing us the grass field; lights and meeting space for this tuneup match.

A West Coast Storm is Brewing

The West Coast Capitals Girls U14 Team gathered last night to play their first game together in quite a while. The girls definitely did not forget each other (if we could only harness that energy, we would be rich!) ... nor did they forget how to play soccer together either.

Although missing one of their key midfielders, the girls came out firing on all pistons and took it to the older Gorge team immediately. The Cap's quickly got their passing game going and were soon striking ball at the Gorge goal. Over the first 5-10 minutes it was apparant and inevitable that some of those shots would get by the Gorge keeper.

What was important tonight was getting together, remembering and working on our system of play and rekindling our playing relationships. Good job ladies.

As parent put it ... "their spirit was huge tonight"!

A Year in Review (Thus Far) - Final Post

This post is our final post reviewing all of the players that make up the West Coast Capitals Girls U14 Team. Posts from this point on will on training / exhibitions leading up to the Florida Championships and posts "live" from Florida for those following.

Sydney is our "energizer bunny" ... she keep going & going. She is a fast/explosive player in a small package and, like Brittany, don't let her size fool you ... she is tall in our eyes!

Natalie is the Cap's second keeper. Tall, strong, solid and not afraid to get physical. She is tough in the air and tough on PK's. She has the ability to also play out when called upon.

One word describes Hannah ... "focussed". She is focussed on soccer at practise and focussed during games. She is also strong on the ball and difficult to strip her of it.

Harmony is another of our big, strong and fast strikers. She has an ability to retain the ball and distribute it when desired - she can also go to goal and blast shots with her left or right foot.

A Year In Review (Thus Far) - Part 6

Continuined review of the players of your West Coast Capitals GU14 team ...

Bub (aka Amelia) is one of outside midfielders who works extremely hard every minute on the field. Strong skills, strong first touch, strong in the air and not afraid to be agressive when required make her an assett for the team.

Garnet is another of our strong defensive players hailing from Sooke (is there any other kind of player from Sooke?). She is a solid defender (centre or outside) with great clearing and heading skills. Garnet also helps out up front when required.

Let's look at a couple of the Cap's that are at the end of the height spectrum for the team ...

Brittany (BK or "sticks") is another of the Cap's midfield wizards. But, don't let her small size fool you ... she is one of the toughest on the team (both giving and receiving).

Veronica ("V" or "v-dawg") is the Caps tallest player and their keeper ... go figure!? Her cat-like moves in the net are characteristic of someone much smaller. She is a team assett and one reason for it's success this season.

Today's installement / review looks at two returning faces in new positions for our Caps; and a new face from up-Island comes down to help out up at the front ...

Erin returned to the Cap's team this season in a new position on the back line ... not a bad position for her with her speed and those large clearing kicks and passes of hers.

Vanessa also returned this season to join Erin the outside back line. Her solid defending, ability to steal the ball from attacking players and her blazing speed made this position "hers" for the season.

Moira travelled south for the season to help the Caps up front. She is solid on the ball, skilled, fast - theses characteristics and her work rate made her an excellent partner for Kristen.

The regular season saw some old faces and new faces for the West Coast Capitals. This installment sees two new faces along with two returning players.

Katie is the Cap's "Rock of Gibraltar" in the centre on the backline (with her partner GiGi). She is solid, aggressive on the ground and in the air and ready to help up front when required.

Kate's another backline "soldier" with extra speed to help recover after her breaking runs up the flank.

Julia is another one of the Cap's outisde back who fearlessly clears balls out of the back. She is especially good in the air with her head balls.

Elise is one of the Cap's midfield "wizards" who uses skills to distribute the ball (passing & possession is her game). She also helps fill in when needed on outside back and mid-field positions.

The Cap's captain Georgia (GiGi) ... determination, agressiveness and "never say die attitude". One of our stalwart centre backs.

Kristen ... the "work horse" up front. She always gives us a 110%. With skill and determination and her work ethic ... the West Coast Capital's have a great assett.

Soraya is a force to be reckoned with ... aggressive, solid and a desire to win the ball.

Bub in a lighter moment and leading the team in a "cheer" (Jai Ho) ... the Capitals know how to have fun too! Bub also helps lead the Capitals on the field with her great play and desire.

16 BC Teams Off to Super Y Finals

A record 16 British Columbia-based Pacific Northwest Division teams are headed to Florida to compete in the USL Super Y-League North American Finals in November.There will be a distinct BC flavour to this year's Super Y Finals, as each of the seven clubs in the Pacific Northwest Division are sending at least one team to the North American championships.

Ladies,
To all the players I would like to thank you for your hard work and dedication to our U-14 Super Y team. To all the families of our players I would like to thank you for your sacrifices to allow the girls to fully participate in our program. To Brad and Gillian I thank you for the many hours of support you have given to this team.

The North American Championship Tournament in Tampa Bay Florida is set to take place at the end of November, I believe we will have the details on travel dates etc in the next couple of weeks. The team will get together several times before we leave for fundraising, all players will be released back to the Super Y team for training some time in November. I will e-mail details as soon as I have them, all fundraising ideas are welcome and can be forwarded to me.

So, our playing season has not ended, we are just taking a few months off before we wrap things up in sunny Florida!!!

Staying Alive, Staying Alive

For our second game vs Thompson-Okanagan, we saw a slightly different "style of soccer" from T-OK ... essentially they were out take take blood from us, not points. I am sure one of their players has a large amount of Capitals skin under her nails from all of the clawing she did on a number of the girls.

Also, we were a different team today ... I think the previous days excitement and festivities sapped our strength and we did not have the same energy or intensity as we normally do. We had some help today from some players from the GU13 team: Sydney Green and Rachel Wams. Thanks girls ... you worked hard and did well without having played with us before.

In the end ... we tied 0 - 0 and kept T-OK off of the board to record V's second shut-out in a row. Our chances on their net were much more dangerous than any shots/chances we gave them.

I only took a small number of pictures (possibly some more to come) - posted here.

Also of note is that the GU14 Girls will have travelling companions to Florida as the GU15 and GU16 West Coast Capitals also secured spots in the North American finals. Way to go girls!

Getting It Done on Day One!

The girls knew what they had to do this weekend to make it to the NA Finals and did it on day one of our two game road trip vs Thompson-Okanagan. Destiny was in their own hands and they had to put up some points up on the board to keep both Surrey and T-OK from overtaking them in the standings.
The Capitals came out hard and quickly put up two goals: the first goal a lovely placed shot by Elise from the top of the 18 and the second goal on a corner kick. Moira sent a rocket of a corner into the 6 yard box and Kathy put it away with a header. Probably the goal of the season (see it below on video).
For the second half, we kept T-OK off of the board by our stalwart defending ... any shots were far out and Veronica was not really tested today.
At the closing whistle the girls knew they were off to F-L-O-R-I-D-A and celebrated by cheering, dousing and shaving a refreshing dip in the nearby water park. See pictures at ... http://picasaweb.google.ca/WestCoastCapitals/CapitalsVsTOKJuly222009#

Highlanders Win One For the Capitals

Some fun times at the Highlanders game yesterday for Super Y Appreciation Day:

- Highlanders commanding win 4-0 over the Whitecaps Reserves. Some fantastic goals scored. I think 3 of the 4 were by headers and 2 of the 4 were from set-plays.
- free tickets for the players/coaches
- the sun (it was hot!)
- team time (i.e. bonding)
- the Bravehearts
- fan appreciation for the Super Y players
- autograph time & mingling with the players after the game
... and for Brad, a nice pale ale :-)

Championship Character

Great game yesterday.....the team showed championship character to be down a goal and then calmly strike 3 times to regain control of the game. Your goals were all quality goals girls ... all results of well executued passes and play off the the ball.

The referees have been challenging to say the least, someone from Surrey WFC even agreed that yesterday's officials were not up to our league standard. But our teams strength has also grown in our mental approach to our play, a bad referee is not enough to throw you off your game.

During the post-game hand shakes the Surrey coaches said to Nigel & I "Great game by your team, they deserved to win".

The team is doing well at game preparation, hydration is the key to performance during warm weather games. Even if players are performing well in a match under hot conditions they must remember to take the time to rest on the days we do not play. Stay out of the sun as much as possible on Monday and Tuesday, find activities that are non competitive and very low impact, stretch 2-3 times a day, eat healthy and again....hydrate!!

Training is cancelled this Monday, an added rest day.

July 16 (Thursday) - Impromptu movie night. Contact Erin for details.

July 17 (Friday) - Rest & Relaxation (R&R). For Friday, avoid the sun tomorrow, drink water all day, all night and have a high-carb dinner (pasta is a good choice) and be ready to keep our team in second place on Saturday.

July 18 (Saturday) - Road game vs Surrey WFC. 12:00 ferry over, be at the terminal at 11:20. We are returning on the 9pm boat home (yuk). Upper Islanders you are on the 10:15am ferry from Duke point. You will be wearing your all-red uniforms.

July 19 (Sunday) - Super Y appreciation night at the Highlanders game, be at the Glen Lake entrance at 3:15pm. We are no longer the ball retrievers for this game ... so we get in free and get to enjoy the game.

July 20 (Monday) - Training at PISE 5-6:30pm.

July 21 (Tuesday) - Beep / Yo-Yo test! Just kidding ladies. Another day of R & R preparing for your final two games. Again, avoid the sun, drink water all day, all night and have a high-carb dinner.

July 22 & 23 (Wednesday/Thursday) - Road games vs Thompson/Okanagan. Back-to-back games with an overnight stay in Langley. See Gillian's separate email for details.

Veni, Vidi, Vici

I think Julius Caesar's famous quote would be a good summary for the game summary: Veni, Vidi, Vici ... is Latin for "We came, we saw, we conquered".

What can we say ... within 13 minutes it was 2-0 for us and we took that score to the half-time break. Although our game started to come down to their level for the part of the game you were able to sustain the pressure coming out of the second half and scored your third goal within 5 minutes. We did not allow one direct shot on net by closing down Coquitlams' attack far up the field ... our midfielders really took away their attack many times.

Some good things we saw...

- we were aggressive & first to the ball

- we played a very good, high pressure game forcing many errors

- we took away their options

- we played a high tempo game

- we attacked and defended well most of the time ... good 2-way soccer

- we did not allow a shot on goal ... OK, let's forget about that PK they got

Good game ladies, let's carry this momentum into our next match where you will have to raise your level of play.

Some Days You Can't Buy A Goal

Although I wasn't at the game, reports were that you girls played a very good game - especially in the second half. You allowed Mountain only a couple of chances/shots and you had many (many) chances on their net but could not capitalize. You ran into a hot keeper and bad luck. The "back-breaker" reported to me was the free kick by Moira, who sent the ball to the top corner of the net only to have the keeper come from no where and make a "miraculous" save. Katie Hanson tells me she was sure it was in and started celebrating!

Nigel's report follows...
Did anyone else notice the looks on the faces of the Mountain players, staff, parents and even the game officials after the game? They were all amazed that we did not walk away with a huge win. Mountain knew they stole points from a very good team. It was one of those days that no matter what we did that darn ball was not going in the net.

Oh well, you did show them a thing or two on how to play the game...well done. Set plays (even our throw in) looked good.

Wednesday we are on the 7am ferry, be there no later than 6:30am. We kick off at 11am in a very big game against Coquitlam. You will be very sore tomorrow, a nice swim would be good and lots of stretching tonight and tomorrow. Again I ask that you do not participate in any other competitive activities until we finish our schedule.

This is how their team/staff saw the game...
Mountain WFC - 0
West Coast Capitals - 0
A very scrappy game with a lot of battles in the midfield area. Both teams defended very well but neither really took their chances when they presented themselves. A very determined Victoria team made it difficult for Mountain to move the ball. Great defending through midfield, the defenders and the goalkeeper for Mountain meant that Victoria was unable to really create anything either until the last 10 minutes of the game. The 0-0 draw was a fair result although both teams will probably be disappointed and feel they had opportunity to get something from it.

No question the outstanding performance of the day came from our goalkeeper Sophie Pohanka who had another strong game. Three great saves, one of them quite simply outstanding, were the difference as Victoria came on strong in the last 10 minutes of play. A very good game by all the defenders, in particular Christine Mulligan (center back) and Jessie Blanshard (sweeper) whose partnership continues to grow. Special mention to the outsides backs Maddie Ballantyne, Sarah Town, Gemma Fox and Megan Wong who all played well and were instrumental in keeping the tie.

Energy To Burn

Our second game this weekend saw us up against a revamped Surrey WFC team (vs last years team). The Surrey team probably captures many of the Surrey FC, Langley and maybe even some of the Abbotsford and Chilliwack players.

From the first whistle we played a very good game positionally. You essentially kept your shape throughout the match regardless of the formation we were playing ... or Surrey was playing. Surrey started with a 4-5-1 formation and when down the goal moved to a more aggressive formation with 3 forwards.

Our pressure on the Surrey defence in the second half caused them great difficulty and they gave up numerous corner kicks (approx. 6) and some very scrambled play in their 6 yard box which ultimately lead to a hand ball and our goal (great placement Nikki). All players had a very good game.

The coaching staff was very pleased with your play - the LISA Technical Director Andrew Latham thought you played well with some great high pressure from our forwards and midfielders. Finally, as Nigel said ... "Four of a possible six points this weekend against some very strong competition, well done. It was music to my ears to hear many of you ask for training to continue over the break."

A bit about Surrey's 4-5-1 Formation:

The 4-5-1 is a defensive formation; however if the two midfield wingers play a more attacking role it can be likened to 4-3-3. The formation can be used to grind out 0-0 draws or preserve a lead, as the packing of the centre midfield makes it difficult for the opposition to build-up play. Because of the 'closeness' of the midfield, the opposing team's forwards will often be starved of possession. However, due to the lone striker, the centre of the midfield does have the responsibility of pushing forward as well. The defensive midfielder will often control the pace of the game

5 Minutes Too Short!

Last week was "5 Minutes Too Long" ... This week was "5 Minutes too Short"

After last weeks game against Coastal WFC, we knew that we were probably short-changed by a very late goal by Coastal, so we wanted to prove something to them. Today we proved to them that we were an equal team and, in my humble opinion, your chances at goal were much more dangerous than theirs.

Nigel notes that ... After we got settled and fine-tuned our strategy the game was spectacular. We made Coastal shoot from outside the 18 yard box and everything they tried to put in the air was headed away or it was gobbled up by Veronica. We aggressively challenged them and counter-attacked at every opportunity - without any disrespect to Coastal (as they are a very good team) but we think they were very lucky to get a tie ... very lucky!!

So based on what we asked of you last week ... "we know we can do better! So let's show them next time ladies". You showed us girls - and the coaching staff and your fans were very happy.

This is how the Coastal WFC staff saw the game...
South Surrey, June 20, 2009 – The reaction of the teams at the end of the game told the story. With the final whistle the West Coast Capitals broke out in a cheer. As the Coastal WFC U14 Girls milled around their bench, more than a few water bottles were tossed in frustration after being held to a nil-nil draw by the West Coast Capitals.

Seven days earlier Coastal had snatched a 1-nil win over the Capitals with a late game goal. The challenge today would be the same as week earlier, to find space in the 18 yard box as a shot from beyond would need to be special to beat the Capitals’ very capable keeper, Veronica Hackett. The game started brightly for Coastal with forays down the wings finding strikers and midfielders in space. The Capitals however adjusted to shut down attacks down the right wing and while more successful down the left flank, the Coastal crosses were handled by the Capitals’ centre backs and keeper. Though possession clearly favoured Coastal, the scoreboard still read 0-0 as the half ended.

The second half started with Coastal applying pressure and the Capitals furiously absorbing the push. Showing improved positional discipline in the second half, the Capitals sought to limit the freedom previously granted to the Coastal back line while on the ball. As result, Coastal keeper Frankie Lunot needed to be alert as the Capitals’ looked for success on the counterattack.

The final 12 minutes of the game held high drama. Coastal and the Capitals each had chances to win the game. The Capitals’ best chance came in the 58th minute when, after another Coastal corner was played too close to the Capitals' keeper, two Capitals' strikers found themselves at midfield with only the two Coastal centre backs between them and goal. Coastal countered at the 63rd minute when a low goal kick was intercepted by Summer Clarke and immediately driven back at the out of position Capitals’ keeper. While Ms. Clarke’s shot missed the right corner of the net, a blast two minutes later by Gabby Villasenor was on target but found Ms. Hackett ready and waiting. While each team continued to press, neither could find a breakthrough and the game ended scoreless

5 Minutes Too Long!

Well ladies ... we wanted that one bad. But we were 5 minutes away from winning a point (and taking two points away from Coastal WFC). The 1-0 final came on a late goal by Coastal - approximately 5 minutes remaining in the game.

On the positive side of things girls ... Coastal WFC is a great team who made it to the Super-Y play-offs last year in Florida. They are a composite from essentially 4 metro teams in the U14 league (Richmond, Vancouver, Semiahmoo and Surdel - 3 of which are top teams in the league), they have 4 girls that were on provincial team last year and as always the catchment of this area is huge. So for our young club we did not do to bad. But we know we can do better!

So let's show them next time ladies.

Capitals vs. Comox Valley GU16 Island Champs

Under sunny skies at Finlayson field our game today was a friendly vs. the Comox Valley Girls U16 Gold Team - also the Island Championship.

The coaches' expectations for this game were to be faced by a fast aggressive opponent, and in the end we expected that the girls would probably tie or be defeated.

I guess someone forgot to tell the girls this! Because they came out quick, aggressive with the desire to win and in a couple of minutes of time had Comox Valley wondering what hit them. The final score was 5-0 for the Cap's.

A brief game review ...
- game started with a small presentation of soccer buttons from the Comox valley team ... a very friendly gesture (great sportsmanship)
- the Comox team was large and fast but were missing three of their starting squad
- the Capitals came out fast and within the first two minutes had placed our first of a five goals in the back of the net (it was a lovely cross fro Kristin, with a flick-on header from Joseline to Bud who finished)
- at 18 minutes, Joseline passed to Kathy who was outside the 18 yard box and hit a hard shot to the top corner
- three minutes later (21 min) Kathy scored another goal with a lovely, well placed ball past the keeper
- at this point things fell apart for the Comox team under our constant pressure - some injuries left their bench with no subs, so thanks to Rachael and Kate moving over to lend a hand in the friendly
- Rachael and Kate helped their back line a lot and stifled many of the Capital's attacks
- the final two goals were in the 2nd half and both were scored by Moira with Josleline assisting on both
- the game today was won in the midfield ... our first line of defence
- we were again without Elise today
- the Finlayson turf helped in our play vs. Comox who probably do not play on turf at all

So ... although the game plan did not work out we had hoped, you girls played great. We worked hard on maintaining our shape and moving the ball around patiently. You will have to maintain this level of play for our next opponent Coast WFC.

Hot Time in Nanaimo

Capitals vs GU15 Port Alberni (Island Champs)

What started out as a cool overcast day in Victoria, progressively got sunnier & hotter as we neared the Caledonia field in Nanaimo. Our game today was a friendly vs. the Port Alberni Girls U15 Gold Team from Port Alberni - fresh off a good season winning the Island Championschip (vs Gorge GU15).

The coachs' expectations for this game were to be faced by an agressive opponent, with a moderately fast style of play and a fairly close game ... but with GU14 Capitals coming out with a moderate win.

The GU14 Capitals had a full team travelling (minus Elise) with the practise squad. It was apprent from the first kick off that the Capitals really wanted this game and the Port Alberni team had not fully prepared for their opposition. The game ended in a 4-0 win for the Cap's.
Some notes from the game:
- the field was lush ... thick, slippery grass --> not a surface that would typically favour our style of play
- we came out fast and hard with a high pressure formation
- three goals tallied by Joseline and one goal by Kathy (on a lovely long hard shot from approx 25 yards out)
- some nice overlapping runs by Rachael playing outside left mid
- some hard physical and finesse playing by Emily and Julia
- good supporting play by Kate Payter, Harmony and Joseline
- a tough day for Vernonica ... with limited shots and action, remaining focused and part of the game is very difficult for a keeper. After a small bauble on her first shot, V was able to settle down and regain her focus and integrated herself into the play when possible (i.e. sweeping type role)
- we were resting some of the girls for a tougher match the following day (Sunday vs GU16 Comox Valley team)

What can we say about Joseline ... three goals with many more near chances and demonstrating some of her footwork. Not a bad showing for someone that doesn't speak English.

So ... a warm sunny day (in Nanaimo); a great game of soccer by you and you had some fun!

Road Trip! Fun + Some Soccer

GU14 Capitals Tie GU13 Provincial Team 2-2
Saturday saw most of the GU14 Capitals waking up very early to make the trip over to Abbotsford for a game against the Girls U13 Provincial Team (fresh off a good showing at the Nike tournament in Portland, Oregon).

Our team was missing Moira & Rachel (helping the GU15 Capitals) + Nikki (helping Claremont's senior girls soccer team) + Erin (she joined the team at the field).

I think the excitement of travel; the early travel time and the heat affected the girls play in the first half of the game. The Provincial Team showed us early their skills and were passing the ball around us - we seemed to be sitting back and waiting and we fell into a kick & run type game. A couple of team defensive errors again cost us and the Provincial Team were up 2-0 at half time.

Nigel made some half-time changes based on some strengths and weaknesses he saw and this seemed to help. The team held their shape much better in the second half and for the most part kept the Provincial Girl's out of our defensive 1/3 of the field. Our first-to-the-ball was better, our passing was better and we started to break down their mid-field and defence a bit better. Our first goal came off of a good individual effort by Kristin to win/keep the ball and placed a lovely through pass to Georgia who was streaking towards the goal and held off a defender to beat the keeper. The second goal was a similar goal although this time it was Kathy passing to Kristin who put the ball away. A great effort from our midfielders in the second half for putting the oppositon under pressure and winning the ball.

A good finish to a long, hot day girls! I understand that the bus/ferry ride home was fun!

Thank you to all you girls for being so GREAT on our first road trip! Up SUPER early, travelling the furthest that we will ever have to go, and being model Super Y representatives on the ferry. A great result today - nice to see you girls turn things around in the second half, and tie up the game. Great effort out there!

A couple of things now... could you girls please try to find some kind of "identifying" key-chain, luggage tag, etc. for your kit bag. It will make it much easier to distinguish them if they are "marked" somehow.

Barcelona Schools Manchester

Well, the GU14 Capital's girls / fans did not do to well predicting the outcome of yesterday's UEFA Champions League final yesterday. Barcelona won 2-0 with dominance in the mid-field (Xavi & Iniesta) - having Eto'o, Henry and, of course, Messi up front doesn't hurt.

Good News .... Capitals Bag Their First Win

Congratulations on your first win ladies ... well done!

Today's game was under a hot, sunny sky at PISE turf field (see special note below on turf fields). A noon kick-off saw the Capitals take on the Mountain WFC club from Vancouver (they are mainly comprised of players from the North Shore and Burnaby area). Our girls came out a bit sluggish playing a high pressure formation; but were rewarded after about 11 minutes by a nice individual effort from Kathy off of a thrown-in.

The second half saw the Capitals put on a bit more pressure and score a second goal, again off of a good second effort by Kathy ... in the corner breaking free from her check and playing a nice long hard low cross in front of the goal to a well placed Kristin - nice finishing Kristin. The third goal was a PK by Nikki (Kathy was brought down inside the 18 yard box).

A good game defending today as the Mountain girls did not get many shots on our net.

I don't want to minimize or tarnish your effort on today's win, but, in last week's loss to Coquitlam your play was much better - more intense with better possession. I am sure you felt that and your fans (parents) felt that. I know that intensity will return!

As discussed after today's game, only 1 training session next week...
- Tuesday 6:30-8pm at PISE
- Thursday - no training

Nigel requests ... Please, please, please, do not book another activity into Thursday's free time, use it to rest. Several of you are showing signs of burn out, the heat and additional activities are catching up with you.

SPECIAL NOTE ON TURF FIELDS:
A University of Missouri turf expert took temperature readings on a third generation turf field on a 98 degree day. He found the surface temperature to be 173 degrees and the head level height temperature to be 138 degrees. On very hot days athletes are practically playing in an oven.

Hydration for health and sport performance is a large and well researched topic that deserves an additional mention here. Hydration requirements will be even greater when playing on turf on a warm or hot day.

So Remember to Hydrate well Before, During & After a game!!!

... Bad News - Highlanders Drop Home Opener

The Victoria Highlanders dropped their first game yesterday and unfortunately it was their first home game 2-1 vs Abbotsford Mariners.

The Highlanders did everything but finish their chances, losing 2-1 to the Abbotsford Mariners, despite outshooting the visitors 23-9. Victoria’s record is now one win, a loss, and three ties in the Northwest Division of the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League, while the Mariners are 1-1-1.

“It’s hard to take,” said Victoria coach Colin Miller, whose team is back home again on June 5 against the Portland Timbers. “We will play worse than that and win, and that’s the disappointment.”

Capitals Kick-Off Season With Great Game

Capitals Drop Tough One 2-1
Our first game of the season brought us up against a very good squad from Coquitlam coached by David Norman. We saw a lot of familiar faces out there as the core of the team was Coquitlam's Metro team.

We played very well but were punished for a couple of errors in critical areas. Our defensive shape and play was more disciplined. We saw that in the first 15-20 minutes where we "allowed" Coquitlam to attack and remained disciplined, calm and dealt with their attack quite easily as they neared our goal. Good job on that ladies!

We scored a great goal and created many opportunities. Passing got better as the game went on. Very high intensity, especially in the second half of the game ... in my opinion, we owned the second half.

The final result was Coquitlam taking the game 2-1.

Sunday should be another rest day with some stretching and ice if needed for injuries.

First League Game vs Coquitlam

Our exhibition game tonight had us playing a fast fairly skilled BU13 Capitals team at Finlayson turf field. We were on the board first with a lovely passing play, capped off by a long shot by Elise from outside the 18 yard box. The boys pressed and were rewarded with two goals going ahead 2-1. However, Kathy equalized the score with a nice break down the left side of the field and placing a lovely placed ball past the keeper.

The girls played very well and the coaches were pleased with their positional play today.

After a first half that saw the GU13 push hard against our Caps, we made some second half changes that saw the bulk of the play in their 1/2 of the field.

Sunday May 3, 2009 saw the GU14 Capitals play a very fast and aggressive GU16 Capitals team at Hampton Park (10:15am start).

The girls played very well for having a large bench and Nigel moving the players around to different positions to fine-tune player positioning, starting line-up and test girls.

GU14 Capitals Pitch In

The girls had a great time last night pitching in at the Lower Island Soccer Association night at the Victoria Salmon Kings hockey game.

We helped sell 50/50 tickets and raised $2622.00 for Lower Islands hardship fund ... well done!!

I think the girls had a great time and got to watch a good hockey game (Victoria beat Alaska 4-0).

Great job ladies and thank you!!!!

LifeMark BioMechanical Testing

As per the Super Y programme, the players are to have a bio-mechanical testing with the experts at LifeMark. LifeMark is located at the end of the PISE building upstairs.

The bio-mechanical testing looks at your player's skeletal and muscle system for strengths and weaknesses. After the testing, LifeMark will provide the player some personal exercises to assist in correcting some deficiencies (e.g. leg or hip strengthening exercises). They may also see something that results in a recommendation of getting some additional physio work.

Having been through this in Metro program last year, I think it helped the players and team greatly.

The players or their parents should call LifeMark directly at: 250-479-9970 to schedule their approximate 30 minute appointment. This is paid for through the fees.

Exhibition vs Capitals U15 Super-Y Team

On a fantastic evening for soccer (sunny & warm) the GU14 girls went to "battle" with the GU15 team. We were well "armed" with our scouting report on the "enemy" (a la the Art of War). The girls started out in an unfamiliar 4-5-1 formation with Nigel working on midfield discipline and defence. It had poor Kathy up front as the lone striker to apply pressure (less than normal) to their defence. After a while the girls went back to a standard 4-4-2.

I understand the game went well in the first half with our "Caps" playing the GU15's fairly equally. The last half saw us loose some of our energy and we let the GU15's pressure the defence and goal and they put one past Veronica. I did see a couple of excellent saves from "V".

I am sorry I could not stay for the whole evening to watch - I was shuttling Erin & Lauren (Erin's twin sister) between soccer and capoeira.

Exhibition vs Gorge U15's

Our game plan today was to dominate their midfield which would limit their access to their strong forwards and to aggressively attack their back line in numbers. We believe we were able to do that - and more!. As our back line was able to join in the attack at times as well. We were very happy to see you change the point of attack several times today. (Don't forget our GK making her debut up front.) .

Some other good observations...
- play out of the back is improving --> two goals came from plays starting in the back field
- four different players got in on the scoring
- some nice passing and ball movement on a field that was not conducive to this
- we did not give up any corner kicks (maybe one)
- a good agressive, clean game

So, a good result on a bad field (lumpy, sand, holes).

Tuesday we have a game against the U-15 Super Y Girls, a tougher opponent that will give us a good challenge. If you would like to share your thoughts on a game plan for Tuesday please e-mail Nigel.

Remember to stretch tomorrow and keep up the fluids, make it a rest and recovery day if possible.

Exhibition vs Lakehill U13 Team

Our first exhibition game together saw us playing a very fast and skilled Lakehill Boys U13 team ... coached by Mario Pecorelli (aka Coach Pasta). We were on the scoreboard first (at 11 minutes) but Lakehill responded with a tieing goal before the half (27 minutes).

Lakehill came out with more energy that the girls and at about the 63 minute mark were rewarded with another goal on a 2v1 break. The girls did not give up and at the 72 minute mark tied the game.
